Sober: After Receiving Alcohol Treatment
Rejecting Alcohol Treatment
Not every addict accepts alcohol treatment the first time around. Some rejected the offer to get treatment a few times before they finally get the help they need. It can be painful on the people who care about them to see them suffer the way that they do. As a family member or friend all you can do is be there for the person when they are finally ready to get help. You cannot, however, enable their behavior. If you continue to let them think that it’s okay to abuse drugs and alcohol then they will continue to abuse drugs and alcohol.
Giving Up On Being Sober
If you’ve fallen off the wagon a few times that doesn’t mean you should throw in the towel and give up on being sober. Sobriety is not something that is achieved over night. Any rehab professional will tell you that sobriety takes time. It doesn’t happen the first time you exit rehab sometimes it doesn’t happen until the fourth or five time. While that number can be depressing and you definitely shouldn’t use that as an excuse you also shouldn’t kick yourself for having trouble beating this disease.
Sober Living Houses: When Your Kids Want To Visit
Some recovering addicts are ashamed of their addiction problem and want to do the best they can to shield their children from seeing that they have a problem. If your kids are young enough they may not remember that you had a drinking problem once and were living amongst other recovering addicts in sober living houses. However, you’re children may know more and remember more than you realize and you don’t want them to worry about you and worry that you’re not coming back. So having them come visit you while you’re getting treatment isn’t always a bad thing.
