Questions

What is "sober living"?
Think of it like the training wheels you had when you first learned to ride a bike. A sober living facility provides a safe and supportive environment while you transition from the rigid structure of a treatment center to your new life in the world, drug- and alcohol-free.

How is sober living different from drug rehab?
Drug rehab facilities offer detox services, individual and group counseling, and an introduction to the 12 Step program of recovery. If indicated, medications (to counteract the effects of withdrawal in some individuals) may be administered. Rehab is generally a very regimented, closely supervised environment. Sober living gives those who have recently begun the path to recovery a safe, comfortable and supportive environment in which they can practice the new life skills they've learned. Many drug addicts and alcoholics find that time spent in sober living allows them to gradually strengthen their new tools and behaviors before returning to their responsibilities at work and at home. They count it as a significant enhancement to long-term freedom from drugs and alcohol.

How do I know when I've crossed the line between using and addiction?
Just as some people can drink alcohol without adverse consequences, some people can use drugs without becoming "hooked." But there's no way to determine, in advance, who ends up in which category. Alcoholics may have only considered themselves "social drinkers" (or even "heavy drinkers") for years, until some experience of "hitting bottom" highlighted the severity of their problem. If you find yourself experiencing cravings for drugs, even in spite of negative consequences (previous arrest, accusations of drug use from business associates or family members, an overdose or other health-related problem) you have very likely crossed the line into addiction.
