A Sober Living Environment: Trying To Stay Sober

What It Means To Be Sober To A Recovering Addict

Life for a recovering addict isn’t easy. Sometimes being sober means the end to the person they were and the beginning to a whole new person, a person without alcohol. That’s hard for any recovering addict to adjust too. They were the life of the party when they were drinking now they’re not sure who they are without alcohol in their life. Sometimes they feel like they have to start all over from scratch, get new friends, a new girlfriend or boyfriend and sometimes even alienate themselves for negativity that comes from immediate family.

A Sober Living Environment Doesn’t Mean No Alcohol

It’s true that sometimes an addict cannot have alcohol in the house or the will fall off the wagon. That can be hard for people who don’t have an alcohol problem and still drink. However if you love the person you are with and you want them to continue to be sober then you will make your home a sober living environment where they can feel safe. Change is never easy but the alternative is that you’re living with someone who is a mess.

Sober Living Environments Can Contain Alcohol

Not all addicts need the removal of alcohol to stay sober. While it’s important to ask them and the rehab team that got them sober how you can create sober living environments for them post rehab, you don’t need to do a 180 if the addict thinks they are okay around alcohol. There are many ways an addict goes about staying sober: classes, meetings, continued outpatient rehab, support groups, sober buddies and sponsors to talk to. It’s usually not one person that helps them. It can be a little isolating for the spouse sometimes but eventually you get used to it.
