Addiction Treatment: Drug Detox Centers and Rehabilitation Centers

Addiction Treatment

Addiction. The word itself resonates negativity. Addiction is defined as the quality or state of being addicted and the compulsive need for and use of a habit-forming substance (as heroin, nicotine, or alcohol) characterized by tolerance and by well-defined physiological symptoms upon withdrawal. More broadly, it is the persistent compulsive use of a substance known by the user to be harmful. Addiction treatment can be a scary and overwhelming process. However, different forms of addiction treatment can be used to fit the individualized needs of a person. In some cases, the recovering addict may choose to participate in an outpatient program, in an attempt to maintain their life separate from their drug addiction. In other, more serious cases, the individual may enlist in an inpatient program at a residential drug and alcohol treatment center. Regardless of the program they choose, addiction treatment varies and many treatment centers’ main goal is to fit the needs of the recovering individual.

Drug Detox Centers

In many addiction cases, drug detoxification is the first step to recovery. Detox involves flushing the body of all negative chemicals, toxins and substances, allowing the individual a fresh palate to begin their recovery. Drug detox centers offer various types of detoxification depending on the severity of the addiction. In some cases, the detoxification process can take a few days, in others it could take weeks.

Rehabilitation Centers

Again, in many instances of addiction, participation in a treatment program at a rehabilitation center increases ones chances of recovery. The main goal of a rehabilitation center is to provide the recovering addict with a comfortable atmosphere, and the tools they need to maintain sobriety. These centers also work on relapse prevention and counseling in other areas of life. If you or someone you know is an addict seeking treatment, consider your options today. It’s not to late to get help.
